Blog Update: Future England Cricket Star - Steven Finn
28th October 2009
You may recall our news article on the 31st July when we announced sponsoring an up and coming England Cricketer by the name of Steven Finn, we then sent you a blog update from Steven on 19th August. As we have committed to providing you regular updates on his season and his thoughts about current major tournaments, we are now delighted to bring you Steve’s latest personal narrative.
Steven Finn’s Blog – 28 October 2009
“At the end of a long season I can sit back and reflect with pride on what was a predominantly successful summer. Sitting with 69 wickets in all competitions at the end of the season shows a vast improvement on previous summers.
Taking on the role of leading the attack in a handful of games helped me develop vastly as a person and a bowler and allowed me to hone my skills in the first class arena. Opening the bowling for Middlesex at Lord’s has been a dream of mine since I was young. To be able to do that with some degree of success this summer has been a wholly pleasing experience.
David Nash’s jockstrap
The summer had it’s ups and downs, none more so than having to share a hotel room with David Nash. Nashy has retired (as of September), and many things about him will be missed. His hygiene and mannerisms around the hotel room are not on that list. The general grubby reputation of wicketkeepers is worsened by a man who has been known not to wash his jockstrap throughout the season.
To have a young squad, as we do, and to have the talent we do sitting around the dressing room it is no wonder that everyone expected us to perform better. But a combination of inexperience and under exposure led to us throwing away many winning positions in games. I think that with everyone becoming more “street wise” we will be able to capitalise on the good positions we get in more frequently next term. Middlesex is a club with the sort of history others dream of and we do belong in division 1 of the County Championship.
New 5 year Middlesex CCC contract
With Angus Fraser at the helm of the club, I believe that Middlesex CCC will get to where it wants to be. His clear thinking and focus will allow the exuberance of youth to shine through. This has prompted me to sign a new 5 year contract with the club because I believe this is the place where I can become an England player. Twinned with the exciting new redevelopment plans for Radlett CC to become Middlesex’s 2nd home, I am currently in a very exciting place to be. The undoubted direction the club now has, opposed to previous years means that I believe we can win trophies and Championships for years to come.
Tour to South Africa
This has been mirrored in my selection for the England Performance Squad to travel to Pretoria in South Africa to train for a month with the likes of Allan Donald. This will be an incredible experience and will give me the opportunity to train with the England test squad before the test series commences and an opportunity to impress the England management. I can’t wait to get out there and show them what I can do. Hopefully when you hear from me next I will have had a beneficial time in South Africa and impressed the right people to enhance my career further.”
All the best for the remainder of 2010!
Steve
